Then they took a mini quiz to get them ready for a mini-test tomorrow. TEST tomorrow over Ch. 8.2-8.5. They will be able to use their notecards on their test.

Science: students have been working on weather forecasting. Today they completed two activities looking and analyzing different weather maps to see if they can predict what the weather will be like in the US. They will be given a review sheet for their weather test they will take during exam time.

2nd hour Math: Today we started a new unit on Solving Equations/Graphing Equations. We will be learning about Slope of a line in this unit. Today we worked on functions, domain, and range. The kids took some notes to help them with their processing of math information today and to help with their homework. Kids received their Ch. 7 tests back today. They need to come and see my sub tomorrow if they plan on retaking the test during Inspire on Tuesday or after school.

5th hour Math: We worked on Quadrilaterals/Parrellolograms in 7.4. Their homework is 1-22, I think? I am not at school typing this and have forgotten. Sorry!

Science: we worked on a summary for our Diffusion and Osmosis notes we took on Friday. Most kids handed them in! We then started act. 42 about parts of cells and how cells make up tissues, organs, organ systems, and the whole human body. Kids read and worked on some questions on their own today. They then needed to complete analysis questions 3,4, and 6 from Act. 42

Wed/Thurs/Friday

Sorry I haven't been posting to the blog. Mr. McNaughton quit student teaching on Wednesday due to some family issues. So I have been trying to do the catch up game for the past few days! So here is a quick overview of what took place in class this week.

Science: Wed/Thursday the kids did an experiment with yeast to see whether cells respire or not. We used an indicator called bromthymol blue which shows whether carbon dioxide is present or not. We then discussed how cells respire and why they respire and also discussed how cells allow materials to pass through the cell membrane through the process of osmosis and diffusion. We took some notes on Friday and watched some animations about osmosis and diffusion. They took a notebook quiz on Friday over activities 39/40. They are posted on edline.

2nd hour math: We reviewed all of chapter 7 and took a test on Chapter 7 on Friday. Grades for the test are posted on Edline.

5th hour math: we started some Geometry on Wednesday with triangles and Monday we will work on Quadrilaterals. Due to a large number of students not doing so well on their Ch. 6 test we did some review during class on Thursday and they retook their test Friday. Grades will be posted shortly. The kids who did well had the opportunity to go to the computer lab and find me some math brain teasers to use for our warm up problems when they come into class. Then Friday they were given a website to go to, to play some math games.

Monday will be a better start and I will continue posting information on the blog! I hope this is helpful:)

Monday Feb. 22

2nd hour Math: quiz today over 7.5-7.7. Kids will receive their quizzes back tomorrow to finish correcting their mistakes. Test over Chapter 7 on Friday Feb. 26!

5th hour Math: kids worked on Math review section within the book. Test over Chapter 6 on Tuesday Feb. 23!

Science: kids worked on a lab today during class on Cellular Respiration. Their experiment showed similarities between yeast cells and human cells and how both of them give off Carbon Dioxide gas when they respire. No homework!

Friday February 19

I solved the Rubik's Cube Friday evening:)

2nd hour Math:
Kids worked on transforming formulas with multiple variables. Their homework for today was 7.7 1-16 page 384 and Check Point quiz page 385, 1-12. Kids will be having a math test by the end of next week.

5th hour Math: Kids worked on percent markup, discount increase and decrease. They made a quick fold-able to help them remember the three formulas for each of the math problems. They also corrected their math quizzes today which will be inputted into the grade book on Monday.
Their homework for today was 6.8 1-24 page 313. Kids will have a test next Tuesday over Ch. 6!

Science: Students finished up a label on Protozoans, Animal, and Plant Cells. There were able to look at microbes under the microscopes yesterday. I hope their shared their excitement with you at home. It was really cool seeing the reactions on kids faces yesterday:) They took a notebook quiz over Act. 37/38. Started a new activity about yeast cells.

Thursday Feb. 18

2nd hour Math: Inequalities with two variables on each side and then graphing the inequality. Their homework was 1-26 page 379. They didn't have much time to finish in class so they probably have some homework tonight.

5th Hour Math: kids worked on a quiz on section 6.4-6.7. They were able to use a foldable they made in class along with a conversion chart. No homework for tonight.

Science: students did a lab on multi-celled and single celled organisms. They were able to view microbes underneath the microscope. Science notebook quiz Friday the 19th over sections 37-38.

Wednesday February 17

Science: we watched a video call Life in a Drop of Water. It discussed the differences between single celled and multicelled organisms. It showed also the different types of microbes that are within our waterways. Kids had to answer two questions when watching the video and they were turned in for a completion grade.

2nd hour Math: kids worked on solving equations with variables on each side. They didn't have enough time to get their homework finished in class so their homework is 7.5 1-26 page 373.

5th hour Math: kids have a quiz tomorrow over 6.4-6.7. Their homework is 1-21 page 306 and Check Point quiz on page 309. they are currently working on tipping, sales tax, and commission sales. Some kids did finish their homework in class.

Up and Coming

What is coming up on the GT Team?

Zero Free Day: this is a day for kids with no zeros on any of their assignments for all of their core classes. We will be going to Westgate bowling on Feb. 11 from 8:30-10:45. The cost for the trip is $4. This price will pay for 2 games and shoe rental.

Reading Olympics:
The librarian and our literacy coach are starting a program within our Inspire classes with a book reading competition.

The Inspire that reads the most books from Feb. 8th to March 8th will win $200 toward their classroom library. We need to be thinking of an olympic athlete we would like to have as our classroom athlete. Every time the atlethe wins a medal we earn medals for our class.

The person who reads the most books in their Inspire will win the following:

Top Reader: $5 bookstore gift card

2nd: $3 to McDonalds

3rd: $2 to Baskin Robins

When they have read a book during Inspire they get their name entered in the drawing in the IMC for a chance to win more prizes. For each book read we are also earning medals toward our overall goal.

We will be explaining more of this during INSPIRE!!! Let's get ready to read and win the Olympics!

The End of Term is Coming Up...

Happy New Year!
The end of the 2nd term is quickly approaching. January 20th is the last day to turn in any missing work from any of your classes. Exams will be held Wednesday, January 20, Thursday January 21, and Friday January 22. These days will all be 1/2 days for students. Students will be getting exam review information approximately 1 week before the actual exams.

Zero Free Day: students will have an opportunity to participate in Zero Free Day after the 2nd term is over. In order to participate, kids need to have all missing assignments in by Wednesday January 2oth. We are thinking about going to Richmond Park on the west side to go sledding. We will keep you posted!

One more thing, I have a student teacher, Seth McNaughton, coming in this semester from Ferris State. He has a strong background in both math and science. Hopefully you will all get to meet him during student led conferences in March. Welcome Mr. McNaughton!
